Hero Cycles started in 1956. It began by making bicycle parts in Ludhiana, Punjab. Today, Hero Cycles is one of the world's largest bicycle makers. They produce over 18,000 bicycles every day!

Hero Cycles is part of a larger group called Hero Motors Company. By 2016, Hero Cycles was selling bikes to more than 70 countries. The company has special certificates for quality and environmental care.

Hero Cycles also makes bikes for other brands. This is called "white label manufacturing." They also sell their own motorcycles under the Hero and UT brands. In 2015, Hero Cycles bought the Firefox bicycle brand.

Hero Cycles also expanded internationally. In 2015, they bought a big part of Avocet Sports Ltd. This UK company sells bikes, electric bikes, and bike parts. Avocet launched its own bike brand, Insync Bikes, in 2018. In 2019, Hero also bought a large share of HNF-Nicolai. This German company makes electric bikes. In 2016, Hero bought 60% of BSH Ventures, a bicycle maker in Sri Lanka.

In 1986, the Guinness World Records named Hero Cycles the largest bicycle maker in the world. This was because they produced more bicycles than any other single company.
