Glenn James Maxwell (born 14 October 1988) is an Australian professional cricketer. He is famous for his powerful and creative batting style. Maxwell plays for the Australia national cricket team in Twenty20 International (T20I) matches. He was a key player in the One Day International (ODI) team, helping Australia win two World Cups before he retired from that format.
Maxwell is an all-rounder, which means he is skilled at both batting and bowling. He is a right-handed batsman and bowls right-arm off break spin. He is known for hitting unusual shots, like reverse sweeps, which makes him very hard for other teams to bowl to. He was part of the Australian teams that won the 2015 Cricket World Cup, the 2021 T20 World Cup, and the 2023 Cricket World Cup.
He is one of only a few cricketers to have scored a century (100 runs in an innings) in all three types of international cricket: Test, ODI, and T20I. In 2023, he set a record for the fastest century in a World Cup, scoring it in just 40 balls. Later in the same tournament, he scored an amazing 201 runs against Afghanistan, an innings many people call one of the greatest of all time.

Early Life and Career
Maxwell was born in Kew, a suburb of Melbourne, Australia. He started playing cricket as a fast bowler but later switched to off-spin bowling.
In 2011, he got everyone's attention by scoring 50 runs from only 19 balls in an Australian domestic game. This was the fastest half-century ever in that competition. This showed everyone how explosive and exciting he could be as a batsman.
Playing for Teams Around the World
Like many modern cricketers, Maxwell has played for many different teams in franchise T20 leagues. These are tournaments where players from all over the world join city-based teams.
- Big Bash League (BBL) in Australia: He has been a star player for the Melbourne Stars since 2012. In one famous game, he scored 154 runs, which is the highest individual score in the BBL's history.
- Indian Premier League (IPL) in India: He has played for several IPL teams, including the Delhi Daredevils, Mumbai Indians, and Punjab Kings. Since 2021, he has played for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, where he has been one of their top run-scorers.
- Cricket in England: He has also played for several county teams in England, including Hampshire and Lancashire.
International Career for Australia
Maxwell started playing for Australia in 2012. He was chosen because he was a good all-rounder who could hit big shots, bowl useful spin, and was an excellent fielder.
He made his Test debut in 2013 against India. In 2017, also against India, he scored his first and only Test century with 104 runs. This made him the second Australian to score a century in all three international formats.
2015 Cricket World Cup
Maxwell was a key player in Australia's victory at the 2015 Cricket World Cup. During the tournament, he scored his first-ever ODI century against Sri Lanka. He reached 100 runs in only 51 balls, which was the fastest century by an Australian in ODI history at the time. Australia went on to win the tournament, giving Maxwell his first World Cup title.
2023 Cricket World Cup
The 2023 Cricket World Cup in India was another amazing tournament for Maxwell. He helped Australia win their sixth World Cup title and played some unforgettable innings.
Record-Breaking Century
Against the Netherlands, Maxwell smashed the record for the fastest century in World Cup history. He scored 106 runs from just 44 balls, reaching his century in only 40 balls.
The Incredible 201 against Afghanistan
In a match against Afghanistan, Australia was in big trouble at 91 runs for 7 wickets, chasing 292 to win. Maxwell came in and played what many experts call the "greatest ODI innings ever."
He was suffering from severe cramps and could barely run. Despite the pain, he started hitting boundaries all over the field. He finished with 201 runs not out, hitting 21 fours and 10 sixes. This was the first time a batsman had scored a double century (200 runs) in a run chase. His incredible effort won the match for Australia and secured their place in the semi-finals.
Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar said it was "the best ODI knock I've seen in my life."
T20I Success and Records
Maxwell has also had huge success in T20I cricket. He has scored five centuries in this format, tying the world record held by Rohit Sharma.
After the 2023 World Cup, he scored a century against India from just 47 balls to win the match for Australia. In 2024, he scored another century against the West Indies. He is known for performing well under pressure, with three of his T20I centuries coming when his team was chasing a target.
On June 2, 2025, Maxwell announced his retirement from ODI cricket after playing 149 matches and winning two World Cups.
Personal Life
In October 2019, Maxwell announced he would take a short break from cricket to focus on his mental health. He returned to the sport later in the year.
Maxwell married his long-time girlfriend, Vini Raman, in March 2022. They have a son who was born in September 2023.
