The Story of Gujarat Titans
In August 2021, the Indian Premier League (IPL) decided to add two new teams. Many companies showed interest in owning a team. In October 2021, a company called CVC Capital Partners won the chance to own the team from Ahmedabad. They made a big bid of ₹5,625 crore (US$960 million). Before the IPL 2022 player auction, the team chose Hardik Pandya to be their captain. In February 2022, the team was officially named Gujarat Titans.
In February 2025, the Torrent Group bought most of the team (67%). CVC Capital Partners still owns a part of the team (33%).
Gujarat Titans' Journey
Many people thought the Titans might not do well in their first season. However, they surprised everyone with their amazing performance! They won their first game against another new team, Lucknow Super Giants. This was just the start of a fantastic season. The Titans won 10 out of their 14 group matches. They finished at the top of the league table with 20 points.
Next, they won against Rajasthan Royals in the first qualifier match. They met the Rajasthan Royals again in the final game. Gujarat won the final by limiting Rajasthan to 130 runs. They then chased down the target with 11 balls left. Shubman Gill hit the winning six! Hardik Pandya was named the Man of the Match. He bowled very well, taking 3 wickets for only 17 runs. He also scored 34 runs from 30 balls. Many people praised Pandya's leadership and how the team worked together to win.
This victory made Gujarat the second team ever to win the IPL in their first season. The Rajasthan Royals were the first to do this in the very first IPL season.
Friendly Rivalries
Facing the Rajasthan Royals
The Rajasthan Royals (also known as RR) are a big rival for GT. They played against each other in the 2022 finals. This was GT's first season, and they beat RR to win their first championship. GT has often won more matches against RR. But every time these teams play, fans feel a lot of excitement and rivalry. Some former RR players, like Rahul Tewatia and Jos Buttler, later played for GT, which added to the rivalry.
Battles with Mumbai Indians
The Mumbai Indians (also known as MI) are another rival team for GT. This rivalry is quite new. So far, they have played 8 games. GT has won 5 of these games, and MI has won 3. MI won their first match in 2022. GT then won 5 times, with MI winning one game in between. Their main clashes were in 2023 and 2025. In 2023, GT won a big match against MI in Ahmedabad. This gave GT a home-ground advantage. In 2025, MI won against GT in a close game in Punjab. This meant MI won the most recent match between them.
Team Spirit and Identity
The team's anthem is 'Aava De'. You can see these words written on the back of the team's jersey. Aditya Gadhvi sang the song in the first IPL season. For the IPL 2024 season, the team had another anthem called 'GT Karshe'.
