Playing for Teams in India
Ishant Sharma plays for the Delhi in Indian cricket. He has taken many wickets in first-class games. For example, he once took five wickets against Baroda.
In 2006, Ishant traveled to England and Pakistan with the India Under-19s. He played several youth Test and One Day International matches for India. Because of his strong performance in Australia in 2008, the Kolkata Knight Riders bought him for a lot of money in the Indian Premier League auction. He was the most expensive bowler bought that year.
In 2018, Ishant joined Sussex CCC in England for two months. This made him the ninth Indian player to play for Sussex.
Ishant's International Cricket Journey
Ishant was only 18 years old when he was first asked to join the Indian team for a tour of South Africa in 2006–07. However, he was later removed from the team before he could travel.
In May 2007, Ishant was chosen for the Test team to play against Bangladesh. He played in the second Test match. Later that year, he was also part of the team that toured England.
Ishant got another chance in the team in December 2007 during Pakistan's tour of India. This happened because some of India's main fast bowlers were injured. Ishant took 5 wickets in the third Test in Bangalore. This good performance helped him get a spot in India's team for the tour of Australia.
Playing in Australia
Ishant did not play in the first Test match in Australia. But in January 2008, he was called to play in the second Test at the SCG because another player was injured. He bowled well in that match.
He was kept in the team for the third Test match in Perth. On the fourth day of that match, he bowled an amazing spell to Australian captain Ricky Ponting. He got Ponting out, which helped India win the match. Ishant used the fast and bouncy pitch at the WACA to trouble the batsmen. He continued to impress with his bowling in the next Test in Adelaide.
In February 2008, Ishant took four important wickets against Australia in an ODI match. He was named the Man of the Match for his performance.
During the 2008 Test series against Australia in India, Ishant was the best wicket-taker. He took 16 wickets and was named the man-of-the-series. This was a big achievement for an Indian fast bowler. He was very good at making the ball swing, even when it was new. He troubled the Australian batsmen, especially Ricky Ponting, whom he got out many times.
However, in 2009, Ishant's performance dropped, and he was left out of some matches.
Key Moments and Achievements
On October 5, 2010, Ishant helped VVS Laxman win a very close match against Australia in Mohali. India was struggling, but Ishant scored 31 important runs with Laxman, helping India chase down the target.
In 2011, Ishant played for the Deccan Chargers in the IPL. After the IPL, India toured the West Indies. Ishant took three wickets in each innings of the first Test. In the second Test, he took his 100th Test wicket. This made him the fifth youngest player to reach this milestone. He was the top wicket-taker in that series with 22 wickets.
After this, India had a tough time in away Test matches, losing eight in a row. In 2011, they lost 4–0 to England and then 4–0 to Australia. Ishant played in these matches but struggled to take many wickets.
In March 2012, Ishant had surgery on his ankle, which made him miss the 2012 IPL season.
In 2013, during an ODI series against Australia, Ishant gave away 30 runs in one over. This was a lot of runs for an Indian bowler in one over. However, he bounced back strongly against South Africa in December 2013, taking 4 wickets for 40 runs in an ODI.
In the 2014 tour of England, Ishant had his best Test bowling figures. He took 7 wickets for 74 runs at Lord's, helping India win by 95 runs. In 2015, he took 13 wickets in a three-match Test series in Sri Lanka, including a 5-wicket haul. India won that series 2–1.
Ishant Sharma got an injury on his right hand during the World Test Championship (WTC) final against New Zealand in 2021. He had stitches on two of his fingers.
In August 2018, Ishant took his 250th Test wicket during a match against England. In the next match, he took 3 wickets, equaling Kapil Dev's record for most wickets by an Indian bowler in England. He finished that series with 18 wickets.
In August 2019, Ishant took his ninth 5-wicket haul in Test cricket against West Indies. In the second Test of the same series, batting at number 9, Ishant scored his first half-century in Test cricket. In February 2021, Ishant played his 100th Test match against England. He became only the fourth Indian bowler, and only the second fast bowler after Kapil Dev, to play 100 Test matches.
How Ishant Bowls
Ishant Sharma is a right-arm fast-medium bowler. When he first started playing, he bowled very fast, sometimes over 152 kilometers per hour. Later, his speed dropped a bit, but he still often bowls over 140 kilometers per hour. People who have coached him say he is a very dedicated bowler.
Coaches have noted that because Ishant is so tall, he has to bowl the ball fuller (closer to the batsman) to hit the stumps. This can sometimes make it easier for batsmen to hit the ball. Some experts also pointed out that his head drops when he bowls, and his wrist position changes. These things can reduce the speed and movement of the ball.
Former Australian bowler Glenn McGrath said that Ishant is more of a "workhorse" bowler, meaning he bowls a lot of overs and keeps the pressure on. McGrath believes Ishant is getting better at adapting to different conditions. He also mentioned that playing on Indian pitches, which are often slower, might have affected Ishant's wicket-taking record.
Playing in the IPL
Ishant Sharma has played for several teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He played for Kings XI Punjab. In December 2018, the Delhi Capitals bought him in the player auction for the 2019 Indian Premier League season.
About Ishant's Life
Ishant Sharma comes from a Brahmin family. On December 10, 2016, he married Pratima Singh, who is an Indian basketball player.
