History of Mohali
Ancient Times
Very old evidence has been found in Mohali and nearby areas. Because there was a lake here, scientists found old plant and animal remains. The Punjab region has many rivers, which is where ancient human settlements likely began. About 8,000 years ago, people from the Harappan civilization also lived in this area.
Medieval Period
The name Mohali means 'settlement'. The village of Mohali was once part of the Sikh Empire.
A village called Lambian, located in the city, was visited by Guru Har Rai. He was the 7th Guru of the Sikhs. A battle happened here between the British and 500 Sikhs. The Sikhs were led by Akali Hanuman Singh, who died bravely in this fight.
Modern Development
After India was divided in 1947, the British province of Punjab was split. East Punjab became part of India, and West Punjab went to Pakistan. India's Punjab needed a new capital city because Lahore was now in Pakistan. So, the government built Chandigarh from about 50 villages.
Mohali was planned after Punjab was divided into three parts, and Chandigarh became a special territory in the late 1960s. In 1967, the area around Mohali Village first became an industrial zone. Later, homes were built to meet the need for housing. The plan for Mohali was announced in 1975. On November 1, 1975, Punjab Chief Minister Giani Zail Singh started the construction of Mohali and named it Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar. In 2012, it was briefly renamed Ajitgarh because the name SAS Nagar was thought to be too long.
City Layout
Mohali and Chandigarh are right next to each other. Only the border between Punjab and Chandigarh separates them. Mohali's original plan extended Chandigarh's road and sector system.
The first 11 areas of Mohali are known as Phases. Early development only went up to Phase 7. New sectors and phases from Phase 8 onwards started in the late 1980s. The city got its bus station in Phase 8 in the mid-1990s. Some sectors, like 48, 51, 52, 54, 56, 61, and 63, are shared between Chandigarh and Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar. Sectors from 63 onwards are in Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar.
