This was during the Guzder League 'A' Division cricket tournament. Pritam Gandhe, who was Vidarbha's Ranji Trophy team captain, helped Yadav a lot. He made sure Umesh got to play for Air India in a Twenty20 tournament. Gandhe noticed Umesh was very fast, even if his bowling was a bit wild at first.

He bowled eight overs and gave away 48 runs without taking a wicket. He played in three matches and took one wicket.
After this series, Umesh was not a regular part of the team. He was a practice bowler when India visited Sri Lanka in July. This helped him gain experience bowling to Test batsmen. Umesh returned to the national team in September 2011 for a five-match ODI series against England. He missed the last two matches because of a hand injury. He took four wickets in three matches.
When the West Indies toured India in November 2011, the Indian team changed its fast bowlers. Umesh and Varun Aaron were chosen because they had played well against England. Umesh Yadav's Bowling Style
Umesh is known as one of the fastest Indian bowlers. His top speed has been recorded at 152.5 kilometers per hour. In January 2012, Sidharth Monga from ESPNcricinfo wrote about him. He said that Umesh is strong, fast, and can make the ball swing late. He also noted that Umesh aims for the stumps and gets many batsmen out by bowling them.
Former Australian bowler Glenn McGrath was very impressed with Umesh's bowling. This was during a Test match in Melbourne in January. McGrath said that Umesh bowls at a good speed and has a great attitude. He also mentioned that Umesh is a bowler who takes wickets. McGrath felt that Umesh has a lot of natural talent and can create good bounce with the ball.
Another former Indian cricketer, Aakash Chopra, was impressed by Umesh's performance in the Border–Gavaskar Trophy in 2017. Chopra said that it's rare to see an Indian fast bowler bowl better than Australian fast bowlers. He highlighted Umesh's powerful bowling in Dharamshala.
