Early Life and Music Journey
Amit Trivedi was born in Bandra, a part of Mumbai. When he was growing up, he mostly listened to devotional songs and Gujarati folk music. His family is originally from Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
Starting with Music
When Amit was younger, he was very interested in electronic musical instruments. In college, he started a band called Om the Fusion Band with his friends. They played at local shows and live events. A music company, Times Music, noticed them and offered to release their album. However, the album did not become very popular because it wasn't promoted much.
Composing for Different Projects
After that, Amit Trivedi started composing music for many different things. He wrote music for plays in Hindi, English, and Gujarati. He also created background music for TV shows and some Marathi films. He even composed short tunes for advertisements, like for McDonald's and Airtel.
A sound engineer helped Amit connect with Sony BMG, a big music company. He then began composing music for albums that were not for films. He wrote songs for singers like Abhijeet Sawant and Prashant Tamang.
Breaking into Film Music
Amit Trivedi got his big break in Film music thanks to his friend, singer Shilpa Rao. She told director Anurag Kashyap about Amit, who was looking for a new composer with fresh ideas for his next film. After meeting Amit, Kashyap asked him to compose the soundtrack for Dev.D. This movie was supposed to be Amit's first film, but it faced delays.
First Film Release: Aamir
Because of Anurag Kashyap's recommendation, Amit Trivedi was then asked to compose music for Raj Kumar Gupta's film Aamir. Amit and Gupta worked together to make sure the music fit perfectly with the movie's story. This work received a lot of praise from critics.
Success with Dev.D
Finally, Dev.D was released at the end of 2008. The movie's soundtrack came out in December and had 18 songs of many different styles. Amit Trivedi called it the "father of different genres" because it was so varied. He sang five songs on the soundtrack and wrote the lyrics for one.
He became very famous for the unique music of Dev.D. Many of its songs, like "Emosanal Attyachar" and "Pardesi," became huge hits. For his work on Dev.D, he won the Filmfare RD Burman Award for New Music Talent and the Filmfare Award for Best Background Score. He also received his first nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Music Director. The highest award for Indian composers, the National Film Award for Best Music Direction, was also given to him for this film.
More Film Projects
In 2009, Amit Trivedi also wrote the score for Wake Up Sid and one of his songs, "Iktara", was part of its soundtrack. He also composed the team song "Game for More" for the Royal Challengers Bangalore cricket team.
He continued to compose for many other films, including Aisha (2010), Ishaqzaade (2012), and Lootera (2013). These films earned him more nominations for the Filmfare Award for Best Music Director.
His music for Vikas Bahl's popular film Queen (2014) also earned him another Filmfare nomination. He later received three more nominations for his diverse music in Udta Punjab (2016), Secret Superstar (2017), and Manmarziyaan (2018).
