A post office was first opened in this area on October 22, 1901. At that time, the community was called Lenton. It was located in Kiamitia County. This county was part of the Apukshunnubbee District of the Choctaw Nation. The Choctaw Nation is a Native American tribe.

Name Change to Gay

The name of the community changed from Lenton to Gay on April 28, 1908. It is believed that the community was named after another town. This town is called Gay, Georgia. The post office in Gay, Oklahoma, stayed open for many years. However, it eventually closed down on December 31, 1932.
