Geeta Dutt (born Geeta Ghosh Roy Chowdhuri; 1930–1972) was a very famous Indian singer. People called her the Skylark of India because of her beautiful voice. She was known for singing in Hindi and Bengali films.

A playback singer is someone who sings songs for actors to lip-sync (pretend to sing) in movies. Geeta Dutt was one of the best playback singers ever in Hindi films. She also sang many popular Bengali songs, both for movies and as standalone music.

Geeta Dutt's Early Life

Geeta Ghosh Roy Chowdhuri was born on November 23, 1930. She was one of ten children in a wealthy family. Her family lived in a village called Idilpur in British India. This area is now part of Bangladesh.

In the early 1940s, her family moved to Calcutta and Assam. They left their land and homes behind. In 1942, when Geeta was twelve, her parents moved to an apartment in Bombay. She continued her schooling at the Bengali High School there.

A music director named K. Hanuman Prasad helped Geeta start her singing career. He trained her and helped her get her first chance to sing for movies.

In 1946, at just sixteen years old, Geeta got her first big opportunity. She sang two lines in two songs for the movie Bhakta Prahlad. K. Hanuman Prasad was the music director for this film. This was the start of her amazing journey in music.

Her Personal Life and Family

While recording songs for the movie Baazi, Geeta met the director, Guru Dutt. They fell in love and got married on May 26, 1953. They had three children together: Tarun, Arun, and Nina.

Geeta also recorded many songs that were not for films. She worked with famous music directors like Sudhin Dasgupta.

In 1957, Guru Dutt started a movie called Gauri. Geeta Dutt was supposed to be the main singing star in it. This movie was planned to be India's first film in Cinemascope. However, the project stopped after only a few days of filming.

Sadly, Geeta and Guru Dutt's marriage faced difficulties. This period also affected Geeta's singing career.

Later Years and Challenges

In 1964, Guru Dutt passed away. This was a very difficult time for Geeta. She faced health problems and also had financial difficulties.

Despite these challenges, she tried to restart her singing career. She recorded new songs and performed in live shows. She even acted in a Bengali movie called Badhu Baran in 1967. She also sang wonderfully in the 1971 film Anubhav. Geeta Dutt's last performance was for an unreleased movie called Midnight in 1972.
