Gegharkunik is a large province in Armenia. A province is like a big region or state within a country. Its capital city is Gavar. Gegharkunik is special because it is the largest province in Armenia.
This province is located in the eastern part of Armenia. It shares a border with Azerbaijan. A huge part of Gegharkunik is covered by Lake Sevan. This lake is one of the biggest freshwater high-altitude lakes in the world! The province has 5 towns and 87 smaller rural communities.

About Gegharkunik Province
Gegharkunik was named after an ancient Armenian king called Gegham. He lived many, many years ago. The famous Gegham mountains and a large lake were also named after him. That lake is now known as Lake Sevan.
Geography and Nature
Gegharkunik is known for its beautiful natural features. The Gegham mountains run through the province. These mountains are home to many interesting plants and animals.
Lake Sevan
Lake Sevan is the biggest lake in Armenia. It is often called the "Jewel of Armenia." The lake is very important for the country. It provides water for farming and electricity. Many people visit Lake Sevan for fun activities. You can go swimming, windsurfing, or just enjoy the views.
Wildlife and Plants
The areas around Lake Sevan and in the mountains are home to different kinds of wildlife. You might see birds like the Armenian gull flying over the lake. There are also special plants like Hippophae rhamnoides, also known as Sea Buckthorn. Some areas, like the Juniper Woodlands Sanctuary, protect unique forests.

The capital city of Gegharkunik is Gavar. It is the largest city in the province. Gavar has important buildings, like the Cathedral of the Holy Mother of God. Other towns in the province include Sevan, which is popular with tourists because of the lake.
