The Gen. Jedidiah Huntington House is a very old and important house located in Norwich, Connecticut. It was built way back in 1765. This house is a great example of Georgian style architecture, which was popular a long time ago. It's especially famous because it was the home of Jedediah Huntington, who was a general during the American Revolutionary War. Because of its history, the house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. It is also a key part of the Norwichtown Historic District.

The Historic Jedidiah Huntington House

This special house is found in the Norwichtown area of Norwich, which is one of the oldest parts of the city. It sits on a two-acre piece of land at the corner of East Town Street and Huntington Lane. A low stone wall lines the sidewalk in front of the house.

What Does the House Look Like?

The Huntington House is a two-and-a-half-story building made of wood. It has a pointed roof and two brick chimneys. The outside walls are covered with clapboard siding, and it sits on a strong stone foundation. The front entrance is quite fancy. It has tall, narrow windows on either side of the door, and decorative columns next to them. Above the door, there's a half-circle window and a simple decorative frame. Inside, the house has a common layout for its time, with a main hallway in the middle and a beautiful staircase.

Who Was Jedidiah Huntington?

The house was built in 1765 for Jedediah Huntington (1743–1818). He was a very important person in American history. Jedidiah Huntington became a general in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. This was the war where the American colonies fought for their independence from Great Britain.

General Huntington fought in some major battles. He was at the Battle of Bunker Hill, which was one of the first big fights of the war. He also took part in the 1776 New York and New Jersey campaign. Later, he spent the cold winter of 1777-1778 with General George Washington's army at Valley Forge. This was a very tough time for the soldiers.

By the end of the war, Jedidiah Huntington was promoted to major general. After the war, he continued to serve his community. He was active in politics, working as a county sheriff and also serving in the state legislature. This means he helped make laws and govern the state.

A National Historic Landmark

The Gen. Jedidiah Huntington House is recognized as a significant historical site. Being on the National Register of Historic Places means it is officially considered important for its history, architecture, or culture. It also helps preserve the house for future generations. The house is also a "contributing property" to the Norwichtown Historic District. This means it helps make the entire historic area special and adds to its overall historical value.
