The General Manuel Belgrano Bridge (in Spanish, Puente General Manuel Belgrano) is a very important road bridge in Argentina. It connects the cities of Corrientes and Resistencia. This bridge crosses the mighty Paraná River. It was officially opened on May 10, 1973, making travel much easier between these two regions.
About the Belgrano Bridge
This bridge is a key link for traffic in Argentina. It connects Provincial Route 12 in Corrientes with Provincial Routes 11 and 16 in Chaco. The main part of the bridge is about 1,700 meters (5,577 feet) long. It stands about 35 meters (115 feet) above the river.
How the Bridge Was Designed
The General Manuel Belgrano Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge. This means its road deck is supported by strong cables connected to tall towers. The main section of the bridge has spans of 163.5 meters (536 feet) on each side, with a longer central span of 245 meters (804 feet).
The bridge features two large A-shaped towers. These towers are very tall, reaching about 83 meters (272 feet) high. The road itself is 8.3 meters (27 feet) wide and has two lanes for cars. There are also two separate paths for people to walk on, each 1.8 meters (6 feet) wide.
A Moment in History
In 1999, there was a time of public protest in the province of Corrientes. People were asking for changes in the local government. On December 17, 1999, demonstrators blocked traffic on the General Manuel Belgrano Bridge. The Gendarmerie, which is a national security force, stepped in to clear the protest.
