The General William Rosecrans Headquarters, also called the Rosser Alston House, is a historic building in Stevenson, Alabama. This brick house has one story and was built around 1855. It was first used as a home for engineers who were building railroad lines through Jackson County. During the American Civil War, a famous Union General named William Rosecrans used this house as his main office. Today, it is recognized as an important historic place.

What is the General Rosecrans Headquarters?

This historic house is a type of building called a hall and parlor house. This means it has a simple, traditional design. It was built around 1855. At that time, railroads were expanding across the country. This house was a home for the engineers working on these new train routes.

A Civil War Headquarters

The American Civil War was a very important time in U.S. history. Before a major battle called the Chickamauga Campaign, Union General William Rosecrans chose Stevenson, Alabama, as a key spot. He needed a place to plan his army's movements. So, he used this house as his personal headquarters. The Union Army also built a fort nearby, called Fort Harker.

Becoming a Historic Site

Before the Civil War, a construction engineer named Walter Rosser bought the house and its land. He was from Michigan. After the war ended, he lived in the house. By 1978, the house was in poor condition. Its roof had fallen in, and some of its walls had collapsed. Even so, its history was important. On July 12, 1978, the house was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places. This list includes buildings, sites, and objects that are important in American history.
