Stevenson first appeared in the U.S. Census in 1880. Back then, it was the second-largest town in Jackson County. By 1900, it became the third-largest. In 2020, about 1,955 people lived in Stevenson.

Stevenson Railroad Depot Museum

The Stevenson Railroad Depot Museum is in the center of Stevenson. It helps keep the history of railroads alive. The museum shows many items related to trains and their past.

You can also see artifacts from Native American culture here. There are displays about early pioneer life and events from the Civil War. The depot building itself was built in 1872. It stands on the site of an older depot from 1852. That first depot was destroyed during the Civil War.

Fort Harker: A Civil War Site

Fort Harker was built by the Union Army during the Civil War. It was constructed in 1862 and made even bigger in 1864. Soldiers and enslaved people helped build it.

The fort was on a hill near Stevenson. It could watch over important railroad lines and supply areas. Fort Harker was a strong earthen fort. It had tall walls, a deep dry moat, and cannon platforms. It also had a special room for gunpowder and a drawbridge entrance.

Even though no big battles happened here, there were many small fights. Stevenson was a key meeting point for two major railroads. The Union Army also had a medical center and a refugee camp in Stevenson. You can still see parts of Fort Harker today.

Depot Days Celebration

Every June, Stevenson hosts its yearly Depot Days celebration. This event celebrates the town's culture and community spirit. It's a week-long festival.

The celebration ends with a fun parade. There's a day full of activities for everyone. The event finishes with a street dance in the middle of downtown Stevenson.

North Jackson High School

Stevenson is home to North Jackson High School. The school's football team has had great success. In 1993, they won the Alabama 4A State Title. They also made it to the finals in 2002.
