GeoSafari is a cool line of educational toys. These toys help you learn about many different subjects. They include the original GeoSafari electronic game, the GeoSafari Globe, and the Phonics Lab. A company called Educational Insights, Inc. owns the GeoSafari brand.

GeoSafari started as an electronic game that taught you things on your own. Two brothers, Burton and Stanley Cutler, created it. They also started Educational Insights, Inc. in 1962. The first GeoSafari electronic geography game came out in 1987. It even included special map lessons from the National Geographic Society! It was re-released in 1990.

How the GeoSafari Game Works

The game uses special cards that fit into the front of the machine. These cards have numbers in the middle. On the sides, you'll find a list of questions or clues.

When you play, a light turns on next to a random question. You then type in the number for the correct answer. After you answer all the questions, the machine shows you your score.

Topics You Can Learn

GeoSafari cards cover many different topics. You can learn about:

Several versions of the GeoSafari game were made in the 1990s. However, Educational Insights no longer makes the original GeoSafari electronic game.

GeoSafari Video Games

GeoSafari also became video games! In 1995, a GeoSafari quiz game was part of the Microsoft Home Pack. This pack featured Microsoft Bob, a special computer interface.

The next year, Educational Insights made more quiz games. These new games had a different look. They worked on both Windows and Macintosh computers. Each game focused on a specific topic:

  • GeoSafari Animals (October 1995)
  • GeoSafari Geography (1995)
  • GeoSafari History (1995)
  • GeoSafari Science (1995)
  • GeoSafari Knowledge Pad: The Plato Collection (2001)

Playing the Quiz Games

The famous musician Richie Havens narrates these quiz games. Up to four players can play at once. First, a player chooses a smaller topic from the main game topic.

During the game, you get a question. You also get facts and clues to help you. Then, you pick one answer from several choices. You have a limited time to answer and score points. You get three chances to answer a question correctly. If you run out of time, pick the wrong answer, or ask to see the answer, you don't score points for that question.

After all the questions are answered, your total score is shown. If you get a perfect score, you earn a medal! If you earn medals for all the smaller topics in a game, you win a trophy for that game!
