George Bundy Smith (born April 7, 1937 – died August 5, 2017) was an important lawyer and judge in New York State. He is remembered for his work in the legal system and for standing up for civil rights. When he was a law student at Yale University, he joined the Freedom Ride. This was a brave journey from Atlanta, Georgia to Montgomery, Alabama. The Freedom Riders challenged unfair segregation laws in the United States.

Early Life and Education

George Bundy Smith was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. He grew up in Washington, D.C.. He went to a school called Phillips Academy. Later, he studied at Yale University. He also went to law school there. His education helped him prepare for a life of serving justice.

A Career in Law

Smith became a judge in New York City. From 1975 to 1979, he served on the New York City Civil Court. This court handles many everyday legal cases. Then, from 1980 to 1986, he was a justice on the New York State Supreme Court. This is a higher court in New York.

In 1986, Governor Mario Cuomo chose Smith for an even higher court. This was the Appellate Division, First Department. Here, judges review decisions made by lower courts. Smith served there until 1992.

Important Decisions

One of Judge Smith's most famous decisions was in a case called People v. LaValle. In this case, he helped make sure that legal processes were fair for everyone. He believed that the rules for sentencing people needed to be very clear and just. His decision showed his strong commitment to fairness in the law.

Later Years

Judge Smith continued his important work. In 2006, some people wanted Governor George Pataki to appoint him to another term. This would have been on the highest court in New York, the Court of Appeals. However, judges usually retire at age 70. Smith would have only served a short time before reaching that age.

George Bundy Smith passed away on August 5, 2017. He was 80 years old. He died in Harlem, New York. He left behind a legacy of fighting for justice and equality.
