George Courtauld, sometimes called George II, spent four years in the United States of America. He went there with his father, the elder George. His father had visited America when he was young. This trip made a big impression on him. He wanted to return to America when he retired from his silk business in 1816.

The elder George went back to America in 1818. Two years later, he convinced his younger son, George, to join him. George the younger spent some of his youth in America. He then returned to England. He took on the important job of running the family's silk business, just like his father had done. George stayed with his father until his father passed away in 1823. He returned to England the next year. He first made sure all his and his father's business in the United States was finished.

Working in the Family Business

In 1824, George joined his older brother, Samuel Courtauld. They worked in the family's silk and crepe factory. This business was growing very fast. George spent four years learning everything about the business.

By 1828, he had earned a spot on the management team. He became a junior partner in the company. The firm was renamed Courtauld, Taylor and Courtauld. His partners were his brother Samuel and Peter Taylor (1790-1850). Peter Taylor was a cousin of George's father. George continued to work for the family business for the rest of his life.

Later, Peter Taylor retired. In 1849, Peter's son, also named Peter Taylor, took his place in the company.
