George Leslie Drewry VC (born November 3, 1894 – died August 2, 1918) was a very brave English sailor. He received the Victoria Cross, which is the highest and most important award for courage given to British and Commonwealth soldiers. This special medal is given for incredible bravery when facing the enemy.
A Hero of World War I
George Drewry was born in Forest Gate, England, on November 3, 1894. His parents were Thomas and Mary Drewry. When he was 20 years old, he joined the Royal Naval Reserve. This was during the First World War. He became a midshipman, which is a junior officer in the navy.
The Victoria Cross
George Drewry earned his Victoria Cross for his amazing bravery on April 25, 1915. This happened at a place called V Beach during the Landing at Cape Helles. This was part of the Gallipoli campaign, a major battle in World War I.
He showed incredible courage during this difficult landing. His actions helped save many lives and were a great example of bravery.
Later Life and Legacy
After his heroic actions, George Drewry continued to serve. He was promoted to the rank of lieutenant. Sadly, he died in an accident on August 2, 1918. This happened at Scapa Flow in the Orkney Islands, Scotland. He was only 23 years old.
Today, George Drewry's Victoria Cross medal is on display. You can see it at the Imperial War Museum in London, England. It reminds everyone of his bravery and sacrifice.
