George Brooke Meares (born October 26, 1841 – died August 21, 1894) was a Welsh man who was both a first-class cricket player and an officer in the British Army.

Who Was George Meares?

George Meares was born in October 1841 at Glandyfi Castle in Ceredigion, Wales. His parents were George Meares and Louisa Maria Jeffreys. He grew up to have an exciting career, serving his country in the army and playing cricket at a high level.

His Army Career

George Meares began his military journey in June 1859. He joined the Royal Fusiliers as an ensign, which was a junior officer rank. He worked hard and earned several promotions over the years.

In December 1863, he became a lieutenant. A few years later, in May 1868, he was given the important job of teaching soldiers how to shoot properly as an instructor of musketry.

He continued to rise through the ranks. In July 1872, he was promoted to captain. Later, he became a major in July 1881. He then reached the rank of lieutenant colonel in 1886. His final promotion was to colonel in December 1889.

During his time in the army, Colonel Meares saw action in British India. He served in the North-West Frontier region.

Playing Cricket

Besides his military duties, George Meares was also a talented cricketer. He played in what is known as first-class cricket. This is the highest level of the sport below international matches.

He played for the Gentlemen of the Marylebone Cricket Club. He also played for the famous Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) at Lord's, which is a very well-known cricket ground.

In his four first-class matches, he scored a total of 52 runs. His highest score in one game was 23 runs. As a bowler, he was able to take 7 wickets. His best bowling performance was taking 4 wickets for just 18 runs.

Later Life and Legacy

In October 1893, Colonel Meares was appointed as a commandant. This meant he was in charge at the Royal Military School of Music.

Sadly, George Meares passed away in August 1894 in Twickenham, England. He died after an illness. He was given a full military funeral, which showed the respect he had earned for his service to his country.
