George Metallinos (Greek: Γεώργιος Μεταλληνός Georgios Metallinos) was a well-known Greek Orthodox priest, historian, and professor. He was born in Corfu, Greece on March 11, 1940, and passed away on December 19, 2019. He spent his life studying and teaching about religion and history.
Life of George Metallinos
George Metallinos was born in Corfu, Greece, on March 11, 1940. He completed his high school education in Corfu. He then went to the University of Athens. There, he earned degrees in Theology in 1962 and Classical Literature in 1967.
After serving in the military from 1963 to 1965, he became a research assistant. In 1969, he traveled to Western Germany for more studies. He lived in Bonn and Cologne until 1975. During this time, he also did research in England. In 1971, he became a priest. He also earned two doctorates: one in Theology from the University of Athens and one in Philosophy and History from the University of Cologne.
Teaching and Leadership
In 1984, George Metallinos became a professor at the School of Theology at the University of Athens. He taught about the history of spirituality after the Byzantine period. He also taught about the history and theology of worship, and Byzantine history.
From 2004 to 2007, he served as the Dean of the School of Theology. This means he was in charge of the school. He retired from his teaching role in 2007.
