George Nevill, 1st Earl of Abergavenny (born 24 June 1727 – died 9 September 1785) was an important English nobleman. From 1744 to 1784, people knew him as Lord Bergavenny. He married into the Pelham family, a well-known family from Stanmer. For a short time, he held a special job as the Lord Lieutenant of Sussex. He became an Earl in 1784, just one year before he passed away.
Early Life and Family
George Nevill was born on 24 June 1727 at Kidbrooke Park in Forest Row. He was the oldest son of William Nevill, 16th Baron Bergavenny, and his wife, Katharine Tatton. George was baptised on 14 July 1727 at St Margaret's, Westminster. Interestingly, King George II was his godfather.
When his father died on 21 September 1744, George became the new Baron Bergavenny. He also went to Christ Church, Oxford, a famous university, in February 1745.
Marriage and Children
On 5 February 1753, George Nevill married Henrietta Pelham at Stanmer. Henrietta was the daughter of Thomas Pelham. She had been married before to Hon. Richard Temple, who sadly died.

George and Henrietta had three children together:
- Henry Nevill, 2nd Earl of Abergavenny (1755–1843)
- Lady Henrietta Nevill (born 24 May 1756 – died 2 April 1833). She married Sir John Berney, 7th Baronet. They had children.
- Rev. Hon. George Henry Nevill (born 6 September 1760 – died 7 August 1844). He also studied at Christ Church, Oxford. He married Caroline Walpole, who was the daughter of Hon. Richard Walpole. They had four children:
- Catherine Caroline (1789–1794)
- Rev George (1792–1825)
- Rev Henry Walpole (born 1803). He married Frances Bart in 1833.
- Reginald Henry (born 1807)
Public Role and Later Life
In July 1757, Lord Bergavenny was chosen to be the Lord Lieutenant of Sussex. This was an important role, representing the King in the county. However, he resigned from this position in July 1761.
A big change happened on 17 May 1784. He was given two new important titles: Earl of Abergavenny and Viscount Nevill. This meant he was now a higher-ranking nobleman.
George Nevill, 1st Earl of Abergavenny, died on 9 September 1785. He was buried in East Grinstead. His oldest son, Henry Nevill, 2nd Earl of Abergavenny, took over his titles and responsibilities.
