Henry Nevill, 2nd Earl of Abergavenny (born February 22, 1755 – died March 27, 1843) was an important British noble. He was also a member of the Order of the Thistle, a special group of knights. Before he became an Earl, people called him Hon. Henry Nevill and later Viscount Nevill.

Early Life and Education

Henry Nevill was born on February 22, 1755. His parents were George Nevill, who was the 1st Earl of Abergavenny, and Henrietta Pelham. He was the oldest son in the family.

He went to Christ Church, Oxford university. He started there in 1773 and earned his Master of Arts degree in 1776.

Family Life

Henry Nevill married Mary Robinson on October 3, 1781. She was born around 1760 and passed away in 1796. Together, they had six children:

  • Lady Mary Catherine Nevill (1783–1807)
  • Henry George Nevill, Viscount Nevill (1785–1806)
  • Captain Ralph Nevill, Viscount Nevill (1786–1826)
  • Lady Henrietta Nevill (1788–1827)
  • Reverend John Nevill, 3rd Earl of Abergavenny (1789–1845)
  • William Nevill, 4th Earl of Abergavenny (1792–1868)

Political Career

Henry Nevill became a member of the British Parliament. In 1784, he was chosen to represent the area of Seaford. He won this election even though some other powerful families supported different candidates.

Later, his father became an Earl. This meant Henry received the special title of "Viscount Nevill." He then decided to represent Monmouthshire in Parliament. He was elected without anyone running against him. He generally supported the government of William Pitt.

Henry Nevill did not stay in Parliament for very long. He became the 2nd Earl of Abergavenny on April 9, 1785, after his father passed away. As an Earl, he became a member of the House of Lords, which is the upper house of the British Parliament.

Military Service

Henry Nevill also served in the military. In 1772, he became a Major in the Monmouthshire Militia. This was a local army group. When the French Revolutionary War began in 1793, he was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel. He led the combined Monmouth and Brecon Militia.

He resigned from his military role in 1805 because of health reasons.

Later Life and Estates

Besides his political and military roles, Abergavenny was also a Recorder for Harwich. A recorder is like a judge.

Around 1790, he rebuilt his family's old home at Eridge. This became his main home, known as Eridge Castle. In the early 1800s, he sold another family estate called Kidbrooke.

On May 23, 1814, Henry Nevill was given a high honor. He was made a Knight of the Thistle. This is a special award given in Scotland.

He passed away at Eridge Castle on March 27, 1843, at the age of 88. He was buried on April 4, 1843. Since his two older sons had died before him and did not have children, his third son, John, became the 3rd Earl.
