William Nevill, the 16th Baron Bergavenny, lived from about 1698 to 1744. He was an important English nobleman who worked for the King and built a large country home in Sussex.
Early Life
William Nevill was born around 1698. His father was Edward Nevill, a Captain in the Royal Navy. Sadly, his father died in 1701 while serving on a ship called HMS Lincoln near Virginia. William's mother was Hannah Thorpe.
Becoming a Baron
When his cousin, Edward Nevill, the 15th Baron Bergavenny, passed away without children, William became the next Baron. This meant he inherited the title and a special seat in the House of Lords. He took his place there on November 12, 1724.
William decided to move from the old family home in Birling, Kent. He sold some family lands and used the money to buy a large area of farmland in Forest Row. Here, he created a beautiful park and built a grand house called Kidbrooke Park. Today, this building is known as Michael Hall School.
Working for the King
William Nevill also had important jobs working for the King. In 1737, he became the Captain of the Yeomen of the Guard. These were special guards who protected the King. Two years later, in 1739, he was made the Master of the Jewel Office. This job meant he was in charge of the King's valuable jewels and royal items.
William Nevill died in Bath on September 21, 1744. He was buried in East Grinstead. After his death, his oldest son became the next Baron.
His Family
William Nevill was married twice. His first marriage was on May 20, 1725, to Catherine Tatton. She was the widow of the previous Baron. Catherine was the daughter of Lieutenant-General William Tatton.
William and Catherine had two children:
- George Nevill: King George II was his godfather.
- Catherine Nevill
Catherine passed away on December 4, 1729, while giving birth to their third child, Edward Nevill.
On May 20, 1732, William married again to Lady Rebecca Herbert. She was the daughter of Thomas Herbert, 8th Earl of Pembroke. William and Rebecca had four children together:
- William Nevill
- Harriet Nevill
