George Oscar Dawson (born around 1825 – died June 1865) was a lawyer and politician from Georgia. He served in the state legislature, representing Greene County. George was the third child of Senator William Crosby Dawson.

Early Life and Family

George Oscar Dawson was born around 1825. His father, William Crosby Dawson, was a well-known Senator. Growing up, George likely learned a lot about law and government from his family. This background helped him become a lawyer and later a politician in Georgia.

Serving in the Civil War

When the Civil War began, George Oscar Dawson joined the fight. On May 16, 1861, he became a Captain in the Confederate Army. He was part of the "Stephens Light Guards" from Greene County. This group was Company I of the 8th Regiment of the Georgia Volunteer Infantry. They were part of the Army of Northern Virginia, a major Confederate army.

Wounds and Promotions

George Dawson was a brave soldier. He was wounded twice during the war. The first time was on August 28, 1862, at the Second Manassas. This was a big battle where he got hurt.

Even after being wounded, he continued to serve. On December 16, 1862, he was promoted to Major. This showed that his leaders trusted him. He was wounded again on July 3, 1863, at the famous Gettysburg. This was another very important and difficult battle.

Later Assignments

After his injuries, Major Dawson took on different roles. On June 10, 1864, he was put in charge of the military post in Columbus, Georgia. This meant he was the main officer overseeing that base.

Near the end of the war, on March 28, 1865, he asked to join a military court. He wanted to work with General Hampton's court in the Confederate States Army (C.S.A.). George Oscar Dawson died in June 1865, shortly after the war ended.
