George Bawa Singh (born May 1937 – died 9 March 1999) was an important judge from Belize. He served as the Chief Justice of the country's highest court, the Supreme Court, in 1998. Before that, he was a Puisne Justice (another type of judge) on the Supreme Court from 1991 to 1998. He also held other key legal jobs, like Solicitor General and Director of Public Prosecutions.
Early Life and Education
George Bawa Singh was born in May 1937. His father, Bawa Singh Mann, was a Sikh who had moved to Belize from India in the 1930s. George Singh later chose to become a Christian.
He finished his studies at Wesley College in 1954. In the same year, he showed his talent for writing by creating three poems. One of these, "Soliloquy of a Murderer," won him a special Gold Medal in a national poetry contest.
Career Journey
After graduating, George Singh worked for a short time as a primary school teacher. In 1955, he joined the public service, which means he worked for the government. He started as a clerk and later became a customs inspector.
Wanting to try a different career, Singh decided to study law. He went to the Norman Manley Law School in Jamaica and finished his law degree in 1978.
After becoming a lawyer, Singh took on several important roles in Belize's legal system. He was the Solicitor General, who gives legal advice to the government. He also served as the Director of Public Prosecutions, which means he was in charge of bringing criminal cases to court.
George Singh also played a big part in setting up the Family Court in Belize. This court helps families with legal issues. He was even the very first judge to serve in this new court.
In 1991, he was named a Justice of the Supreme Court. This was a big step in his career. On 2 February 1998, he was sworn in as the Chief Justice of Belize. This is the highest judicial position in the country.
However, due to his health, George Singh was transferred to a different role on 26 August 1998. He became a judge of the Court of Appeal, which was a less demanding job. Manuel Sosa then became the new Chief Justice.
Family Life
George Singh was married and had a large family. He had three sons and two daughters, and he was also a grandfather to five grandchildren. Two of his sons are well-known: Douglas Singh, who was a Minister of Police, and Michael Singh, who was a CEO for Trade and Investments in Belize.
Passing Away
George Singh passed away on 9 March 1999, after dealing with a long-term illness.
