George L. Stevens (born 1932, died 2006) was an important American leader. He was a Baptist minister, a civil rights activist, and a politician. He worked to make things fair for everyone. He served on the San Diego City Council, which helps run the city.

Early Life and Education

George Stevens was an African American man born in Junction City, Louisiana. His family was not wealthy. When he was 13, his family moved to El Centro, California. Later, in the 1950s, he moved to San Diego.

Career and Activism

Ministry and Civil Rights Work

George Stevens was an associate pastor at the Mount Erie Baptist Church in San Diego. He personally experienced unfair treatment in the 1950s. For example, a builder once refused to sell him a house because of his race.

In the 1960s, he became a strong voice for civil rights. He took part in protests against unfair hiring practices. He wanted to make sure everyone had an equal chance to get a job. He sometimes faced consequences for his peaceful actions during these protests.

Political Journey

From 1974 to 1990, George Stevens worked for Jim Bates. Bates was a San Diego County Supervisor and later a Congressman. This experience helped Stevens learn a lot about politics.

Stevens tried to join the City Council in 1965 and again in 1987, but he didn't win those elections. In 1991, he was finally elected to represent District 4 on the San Diego City Council. He served on the council from 1991 until 2002. He had to leave office because of term limits, which means a person can only serve for a certain number of years.

As a councilman, he worked very hard for his district. He believed his area had been ignored by the city for many years. Thanks to his efforts, new public places and services came to his district. These included the Malcolm X Library, the Tubman-Chavez Multicultural Center, and a training center for the Black Contractors Association.

After leaving the City Council, he ran for the California State Assembly in 2002. He lost that election. He then worked for Assemblywoman Shirley Horton. He continued working for her until just a few days before he passed away.

In 2005, after his successor on the City Council, Charles L. Lewis, died, Stevens ran for the District 4 seat again. However, he lost to Tony Young.

Personal Life

George Stevens was married to Brenda. They had four children together: one daughter and three sons.

Recognition and Legacy

The George L. Stevens Senior Center in Encanto is named in his honor. This center helps older adults in the community. It stands as a reminder of his dedication and service to San Diego.
