Charles L. Lewis III (October 3, 1966 – August 8, 2004) was an American politician. He served as a member of the San Diego City Council. He was elected in 2002. Before that, he worked as the chief of staff for the council member before him, George Stevens.
Growing Up and Learning
Lewis was born on October 3, 1966, in Tucson, Arizona. He grew up in the Skyline neighborhood of San Diego. He went to Morse High School and graduated in 1984. While there, he was on the wrestling and football teams.
After high school, he attended San Diego State University. He earned a bachelor's degree in public administration in 1990. During his last year of college, he worked as an intern for U.S. Congressman Jim Bates. An intern is someone who works to gain experience.
His Work as a Leader
Charles Lewis III worked for council member George Stephens for almost ten years. He was Stephens' chief of staff. A chief of staff helps a leader with their daily tasks and projects.
While working as chief of staff, Lewis helped with many important projects. He helped put up holiday lights on the Cabrillo Bridge. He also helped install over 80 "Dr. Martin Luther King Jr." signs on the California State Route 94 freeway. This project had been approved years earlier but needed funding.
When George Stephens left the City Council, Lewis was chosen to run for his seat. He won the election in 2002. The City Council is a group of elected officials who make decisions for a city.
During his time as a council member, he helped create a new park in City Heights. He also led the effort to build a skate park. Both of these parks are now named after him. He also played a big part in creating more than 20 neighborhood councils. These councils help local communities have a say in city decisions.
Charles Lewis III passed away unexpectedly on August 8, 2004. He was 37 years old. The day before he died, he had attended his high school's 20-year reunion. His chief of staff, Tony Young, took his place in a special election.
