Tony Young's Career
Tony Young went to Howard University for his education.
Serving on the San Diego City Council
Young was chosen to represent District 4 on the San Diego City Council. This happened on January 4, 2005. It was a special election because the previous council member, Charles L. Lewis III, had passed away. Young had worked as Lewis's chief of staff before this. People easily re-elected Young in 2006 and again in 2010.
In December 2010, the other council members all voted for Young to become the President of the San Diego City Council. He quickly promised to make changes. He wanted the City Council to be more open to the public. He also said their main focus would be solving the city's money problems. He even said, "Don't be surprised if you see that (the budget deficit) on the agenda every week until that's corrected." He also led important committees, like the Rules Committee.
In November 2012, Young announced he would leave the City Council. He planned to become the CEO of the American Red Cross chapter for San Diego and Imperial Counties. His resignation became official on January 1, 2013. This meant a special election had to be held in March to choose someone to finish his term.
He led the local Red Cross chapter from January 2013 until March 2014. In March 2014, the national American Red Cross organization told the local board that Young was no longer in charge. No official reason was given. Young said there was a "difference of opinion" about how things should be done.
