Myrtle Cole is an American politician. She was a member of the San Diego City Council from 2013 to 2018. She represented District 4 in San Diego.
Myrtle Cole is part of the Democratic Party. She made history as the first African American woman elected to the San Diego City Council. She also served as the council president from 2017 to 2018. In 2018, she did not win her re-election. This was a rare event, as not many council members lose their re-election bids.

Myrtle Cole's Time on the Council
Myrtle Cole first became a council member in 2013. This happened during a special election for District 4. She took over the seat from Tony Young. District 4 covers many neighborhoods in San Diego. These include places like Alta Vista, Emerald Hills, and Paradise Hills.
Myrtle Cole won her re-election in June 2014. She received 57% of the votes. Her second term on the council started in December 2014.
Becoming Council President
In December 2016, Myrtle Cole became the president of the City Council. The council president has important jobs. They help decide what topics the council will discuss. They also choose which council members work on different committees.
Myrtle Cole was chosen by her fellow council members. Six out of nine members voted for her. She served as council president until December 2018.
Re-election in 2018
In November 2018, Myrtle Cole ran for re-election again. However, she lost to Monica Montgomery. Monica Montgomery was a civil rights attorney. This was the first time since 1992 that a council member lost their re-election in San Diego.
