Early Life and Military Service
George W. Brinkerhoff was born on October 23, 1838, in a place called Red Creek, New York.
When he was 23 years old, in August 1862, George joined the army during the American Civil War. He started as a sergeant in the 138th New York Infantry Regiment. This group later became known as the 9th New York Heavy Artillery Regiment in December 1862.
George was a dedicated soldier and earned several promotions. In March 1864, he became a second lieutenant. By October 1864, he was promoted to first lieutenant. Just two months later, in December 1864, he became a captain, leading his own company of soldiers. He finished his military service in July 1865. He was also given an honorary title of brevet major for his brave service.
Life After the War
After the Civil War ended, George Brinkerhoff went back home to Red Creek. He became a farmer, working hard on his land. By 1899, he owned a large farm that was about 200 acres.
George was also involved in his local community. He served as the town supervisor for Wolcott. A town supervisor is like a mayor or a main leader for a town. He was also a member of groups like the Farmers' Alliance and the Grange. These groups helped farmers work together and support each other.
Political Career
In 1891, George Brinkerhoff decided to enter politics. He was elected to the New York State Assembly. This is a part of the state government where laws are made. He was a member of the Republican party. He represented the 1st District of Wayne County, New York.
He served in the Assembly during 1892. While he was there, he helped pass an important bill. This bill made it so that county clerks and sheriffs in the state no longer charged fees for their services. He also helped get a bill passed to build a bridge across Sodus Bay.
Family and Later Life
George Brinkerhoff was also a member of two other important organizations. He belonged to the Grand Army of the Republic, which was a group for Civil War veterans. He was also a member of the Odd Fellows, a fraternal organization that helps its members and communities.
In 1860, George married Marie Frost. They had four children together: Leslie, Ernest, Eliza, and Della.
George W. Brinkerhoff passed away on March 20, 1919. He was buried in the Fairmont Cemetery in Red Creek, the same town where he was born.
