History of Red Creek

People first settled in the area around 1811. The village was first called "Jacksonville." This name honored Andrew Jackson, who later became a U.S. President.

Around 1836, the name was changed to "Red Creek." This new name came from the creek that flows through the village. People thought the water looked red because of iron ore in the creek bed.

There's also a local story about the name. Long ago, a place that processed animal skins (a tannery) was by the creek. They used dye to color the skins. When they cleaned up, the dye flowed into the pond. This made the water look red as it went over the dam.

The village officially became a village in 1852. This means it got its own local government. In 1874, a big fire destroyed most of the businesses in the village.
