George W. Ford (born in 1844, died November 29, 1883) was an Irish soldier. He fought bravely in the American Civil War. Ford earned the Medal of Honor, which is the highest award for bravery in the United States. He received this special award for his actions during the Battle of Sayler's Creek. This important battle happened in Virginia on April 6, 1865. George Ford was honored with the Medal of Honor on May 10, 1865.

Life and Military Service

George W. Ford was born in Ireland in 1844. When the American Civil War began, he joined the Union Army. In September 1861, he became a sergeant in the 88th New York Infantry regiment.

Serving in the War

As a sergeant, Ford helped lead a small group of soldiers. He showed great dedication during his time in the army. In July 1864, he was promoted to first lieutenant. This meant he was now an officer, leading a larger group of soldiers.

End of Service and Legacy

George Ford served until the war ended. He left the army with his regiment in June 1865. He passed away on November 29, 1883. His final resting place is at Calvary Cemetery in Woodside, New York. His bravery during the Civil War is remembered through his Medal of Honor.
