George Weeks's Early Life and Family
George Weeks was born on December 1, 1836, in a place called Brownville, New York. When he was about 14 years old, in 1850, he moved to Concord, Wisconsin. A couple of years later, in 1852, he settled in York, Dane County, Wisconsin. There, he worked as a farmer.
On December 9, 1860, George Weeks got married to Helen Manning. She was born in 1843 and passed away in 1918.
George Weeks in the Civil War
During the American Civil War, George Weeks joined the Union Army. He first signed up with the 29th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Later, he became an officer, which means he was a leader in the army. He had to leave for a while because he became sick.
In 1864, he joined another group called the 36th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment. George Weeks took part in several battles, including the Battle of Cold Harbor. After the war ended, he was promoted to the rank of captain.
