Sir George Wyatt Truscott, 1st Baronet (born 9 October 1857 – died 16 April 1941) was a British businessman. He held the important position of Lord Mayor of London from 1908 to 1909.

Early Life and Family Connections

George Wyatt Truscott was born in 1857. He was the oldest son of Sir Francis Wyatt Truscott and Eliza Freeman. His father was also a famous Lord Mayor of London from 1879 to 1880. This meant public service was a family tradition for the Truscotts.

George went to private schools. He also spent some time studying in Paris, France. Later, he became the Chairman of a company called Brown, Knight & Truscott, Ltd. This company specialized in printing and stationery. He lived in Upper Norwood, a London suburb, just like his parents had.

Serving the City of London

Truscott had a long and active career in the City of London Corporation. This is the local government for the historic part of London.

Early Roles in the City

He started as a Common Councilman for the City of London from 1882 to 1895. This role is similar to being a local councillor. In 1895, he was chosen as an Alderman for the Dowgate area. He took over this position from his late father.

Becoming a Sheriff

In 1902, Truscott was elected as a Sheriff of the City of London. He served in this role from October 1902 to September 1903. During this time, he went on an official visit to Newcastle upon Tyne with the Lord Mayor, Sir Marcus Samuel. They explored the River Tyne and visited local factories.

Lord Mayor of London

Five years later, in 1908, he was elected Lord Mayor of the City of London. He served from November 1908 to November 1909. As Lord Mayor, Truscott had many important duties. He was involved with several hospitals and city committees. In 1937, he received the Honorary Freedom of the City of London. This is a special award for people who have done a lot for the city.

One of his notable actions as Lord Mayor was opening the wider Blackfriars Bridge. He also drove the first tram across it on 14 September 1909.

Honours and Awards

While he was a Sheriff, George Truscott was made a Knight Bachelor in November 1902. King Edward VII officially knighted him at Buckingham Palace in December 1902.

Because of his excellent service as Lord Mayor, he was given the title of Baronet. This special honour was given on 16 July 1909. He received several awards from other countries too. These included honours from France, Belgium, Sweden, Japan, and Russia.

Family Life

Sir George Truscott married Jessie Stanham. She was the daughter of an architect named George Gordon Stanham. Jessie passed away in 1921. They had two sons and two daughters. Sadly, one of their sons died during a war. Their other son, Eric Homewood Stanham Truscott, became the 2nd Baronet after his father's death in 1941.
