George Milton Ziegler (1832–1912) was an officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He was from Ohio and served bravely during this important time in American history. He started his military career as a second lieutenant and rose through the ranks.

George Ziegler's Military Service

George Ziegler began his journey in the army on August 28, 1861. He joined the 47th Ohio Infantry Regiment. This was a group of soldiers from Ohio who fought for the Union.

Rising Through the Ranks

Ziegler quickly showed his skills and dedication.

  • On December 6, 1861, he was promoted to first lieutenant.
  • A year later, on December 28, 1862, he became a captain.
  • By December 22, 1864, he was named a colonel. He led the 52nd United States Colored Infantry Regiment. This regiment was made up of African American soldiers.

A Special Honor

After the war, George Ziegler received a special honor. On March 24, 1866, President Andrew Johnson nominated him for a special rank. This rank was called brevet brigadier general. A "brevet" rank is an honorary promotion. It means he was recognized for his excellent service. The United States Senate confirmed this honor on April 10, 1866.

Later Life

George Ziegler passed away in 1912. He was laid to rest at Green Lawn Cemetery in Columbus, Ohio. His service helped shape the history of the United States.
