Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Georgia Holt was born Jackie Jean Crouch in Kensett, Arkansas, in 1926. Her mother was Lynda Inez Gulley and her father was Roy Malloy Crouch. Georgia often moved between her parents' homes. She estimated that she attended 17 different junior high schools during her childhood. Her father taught her how to sing and play the guitar.
Georgia began singing on an Oklahoma City radio station when she was just six years old. By the age of 10, she was already singing with the famous band Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys.
Career Highlights
As she grew up, Georgia won many talent and beauty contests. In the 1950s, she had several small roles in movies and on television. Some of her film appearances included Watch the Birdie (1950), Grounds for Marriage (1951), and Lovely to Look At (1952). During the mid-1950s, she mostly earned money by singing in clubs.
Later, in 1978, Georgia performed at a singers' workshop in Los Angeles. This led to her being invited to appear on popular TV talk shows. She was a guest on shows hosted by Mike Douglas, Merv Griffin, and Dinah Shore. In 1988, she also appeared on the game show Card Sharks. She was part of a group of ten mothers of famous celebrities.
In 2013, a special documentary about Georgia Holt was released. It was called Dear Mom, Love Cher and was produced by her daughter, Cher. In the same year, Georgia also released her album titled Honky Tonk Woman. This album was actually recorded way back in 1982 with Elvis Presley's band. Georgia found the old tapes, which then led to the idea for the documentary. The album even includes a song called "I'm Just Your Yesterday," which she sang as a duet with Cher.
To promote the documentary and album, Georgia and Cher appeared together on popular TV shows. They were guests on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
Family Life
Georgia Holt was married several times throughout her life. She had two daughters. Her first daughter, Cher, was born in 1946. Later, she had her second daughter, Georganne LaPiere. In 1961, her husband at the time, Gilbert Hartmann LaPiere, legally adopted both Cher and Georganne. Their last name was then changed to LaPiere.
Georgia Holt had two grandsons through her daughter Cher: Chaz Bono and Elijah Blue Allman. From 1976 until her passing, Georgia was in a relationship with Craig Spencer.
Georgia Holt passed away on December 10, 2022, at the age of 96. Her daughter, Cher, shared the news on Twitter. Georgia was survived by her partner, her daughters, and her grandsons.
