Jerry Brisco's Early Life and Amateur Wrestling
Gerald Brisco grew up in Oklahoma with five brothers and sisters. He followed his brother, Jack, into amateur wrestling. This is a type of wrestling done in schools and colleges. Jerry was very good and earned a scholarship to Oklahoma State University. He won two big tournaments and only lost two high school matches.
In 1968, during a school break, Jerry was with Jack in Missouri. Jack's wrestling partner was hurt. Jerry was asked to step in, even though he hadn't trained as a professional. Professional Wrestling Career Highlights
The Brisco Brothers: A Tag Team Story (1967–1984)
Jerry was trained by his brother, Jack. He started wrestling in 1967 as Gerald Brisco. He teamed up with Jack, and they became "The Brisco Brothers." They were a very successful team. Over 13 years, they won more than 20 tag team championships.
In 1970, they came to Florida, and Jerry started using the name "Jerry Brisco." They were very strong in both single and tag team matches. In the late 1970s, the Brisco brothers found Terry Bollea. He later became the famous wrestler Hulk Hogan. Jerry Brisco also won many single championships. He was the first person to hold the NWA Mid-Atlantic Heavyweight Championship. In 1981, he won the NWA World Junior Heavyweight Championship.
In 1983, the brothers started playing "bad guys" in their matches. They wrestled against Ricky Steamboat and Jay Youngblood. These two teams fought for the NWA World Tag Team Championship. The belts went back and forth between them. Their big match was at the first Starrcade event. Steamboat and Youngblood won the championship back. The Brisco Brothers held the title one last time in 1984. They lost it to Wahoo McDaniel and Mark Youngblood. Soon after, they left that wrestling area.
The Brisco brothers also owned a small part of a wrestling company called Georgia Championship Wrestling. In 1984, they were not happy with how the company was doing. They worked with other owners to sell their shares. This sale helped Vince McMahon make his wrestling company, WWE, even bigger.
Working for WWE (1984–2020)
The Brisco brothers joined the World Wrestling Federation in 1984. They were once again playing "good guys" that fans cheered for. They tried to win the WWF World Tag Team Championship. But they were not successful against Adrian Adonis and Dick Murdoch. Both brothers stopped wrestling in early 1985. After retiring, Jerry Brisco started working backstage. He became a "road agent" and talent scout for Vince McMahon.
After a famous event in 1997, Jerry Brisco became a TV character again. He and Pat Patterson played funny "stooges" for Vince McMahon. They were part of groups like The Corporation. They would make fun of Hulk Hogan, who worked for a rival wrestling company. They even copied his famous moves and used his old entrance music.
On May 18, 2000, Jerry Brisco won his first WWE championship. He pinned a sleeping Crash Holly to win the Hardcore Championship. This title was often fought for in unusual ways. Crash won the title back later. Brisco chased Holly around New York City to get it back. He finally won it again with help from Pat Patterson.
After winning, Patterson poured champagne in Brisco's eyes. Then he broke a bottle over Brisco's head. Patterson then pinned Brisco, who was pretending to be unconscious. This made Patterson the new Hardcore Champion. Patterson tried to hide from Brisco by dressing up in women's clothes. Vince McMahon then set up a special match between them. It was a Hardcore Evening Gown Match at the King of the Ring event. During the match, Crash Holly interfered and pinned Patterson. Holly won the title back again.
In 2005, Brisco was honored in the George Tragos/Lou Thesz Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame. He appeared at WrestleMania 23 and on a TV show in 2007. On March 29, 2008, Jerry and his brother Jack were inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame. This happened the night before WrestleMania XXIV. In 2009, Jerry Brisco had some health issues. In 2010, he returned to WWE as a talent scout for NXT. On July 22, 2019, during a special TV episode, Brisco won the WWE 24/7 Championship backstage. He later lost the title to Kelly Kelly. He left WWE in 2020.
