Gerard Kornelis van het Reve (born December 14, 1923 – died April 8, 2006) was a famous Dutch writer. He first wrote under the name Simon Gerard van het Reve. Later, in 1973, he shortened it to Gerard Reve.

He is known as one of the "Great Three" of Dutch literature after World War II. The other two writers are Willem Frederik Hermans and Harry Mulisch. Reve's 1981 novel De vierde man (The Fourth Man) was even made into a movie. This film was directed by Paul Verhoeven in 1983.

Gerard Reve was born in Amsterdam, which is in the Netherlands. He had a brother named Karel van het Reve. Karel was also a writer and a Slavicist, someone who studies Slavic languages and cultures.

Awards and Recognition

Gerard Reve received several important awards for his writing. These awards showed how much his work was valued.

  • 1947: He won the Reina Prinsen Geerligs Award.
  • 2001: He was honored with the Prijs der Nederlandse Letteren. This is a very important literary prize in the Netherlands.

Books Translated into English

Many of Gerard Reve's books were translated so people in English-speaking countries could read them. Here are some of his works available in English:

  • The Acrobat (written in English, 1956). This book was published in Amsterdam and London.
  • Parents Worry (Bezorgde ouders, 1990). This book was translated by Richard Huijing.
  • The Evenings (De avonden, 1947). Sam Garrett translated this novel.
  • Childhood. Two Novellas (Werther Nieland, 1949, and De ondergang van de familie Boslowits, 1950). These two short novels were also translated by Sam Garrett.

Movies Based on His Work

Gerard Reve's stories were so good that some were turned into films.

In 1980, a film called Dear Boys (Lieve jongens) was released. It was a comedy-drama directed by Paul de Lussanet. The movie starred actors like Hugo Metsers, Hans Dagelet, and Bill van Dijk.
