Germán Adrián Ramón Burgos (born 16 April 1969) is a famous Argentine footballer. People often call him El Mono Burgos, which means "The Monkey Burgos". He was a talented goalkeeper and is now a manager.
During his 15 years as a professional player, he played for several teams. These included Ferro Carril Oeste and River Plate in Argentina. He also played for Mallorca and Atlético Madrid in Spain. Germán Burgos also represented his country, Argentina, in international matches.
After he stopped playing, Burgos became a coach. He worked as an assistant coach for many teams. His most well-known role was with Atlético Madrid. He joined them in 2011 and worked alongside his friend, Diego Simeone.

Starting Out in Argentina
Germán Burgos was born in Mar del Plata, Argentina. He began his professional football journey with Ferro Carril Oeste. In 1994, he moved to one of Argentina's biggest clubs, River Plate.
At River Plate, he earned his nickname Mono (monkey). This was because of his height and energetic style. He won several important titles with River Plate. One big win was the 1994 Apertura. His team didn't lose a single match that season!
Moving to Spain
In July 1999, Burgos moved to Spain. He joined Mallorca. For two years, he was a backup goalkeeper for the team. During his time there, he faced a suspension for an incident during a match.
In the 2001–02 season, Burgos signed with Atlético Madrid. The club was in the Segunda División, which is Spain's second division. He had a great year, helping Atlético Madrid return to La Liga, the top league. He played less in the next two seasons. He retired in 2004 when he was 35 years old.
A Memorable Moment in Goal
Burgos is remembered for a special moment in a game. It was a Madrid derby against Real Madrid. This happened in the 2002–03 season. He saved a Luís Figo penalty kick with his nose! This caused a bloody injury, but he kept playing. His team then scored to make the game a 2–2 draw.
Playing for Argentina
Germán Burgos played 35 matches for the Argentina over seven years. He was a backup goalkeeper in two FIFA World Cup tournaments. These were the 1998 and 2002 FIFA World Cups. He supported Carlos Roa in 1998 and Pablo Cavallero in 2002.
Burgos was the main goalkeeper for part of the qualifying games for the 2002 World Cup. Many expected him to be the starter in the main tournament. However, the manager, Marcelo Bielsa, chose Cavallero instead.
Germán Burgos: Coaching Career
In 2010, Burgos started his coaching career in Spain. He first worked as a goalkeeping coach for Alcorcón. Then, he became a manager for a small team called Carabanchel.
In the following years, he became an assistant coach. He worked with his former teammate, Diego Simeone. They coached together at Catania, Racing Club de Avellaneda, and most famously, Atlético Madrid.
Using New Technology
In April 2014, Burgos made history. He became the first coach in the world to use Google Glass during a game. This happened in a match against Getafe.
Taking Charge as Caretaker Manager
Burgos often stepped in as head coach when Diego Simeone was suspended. In 2018, Simeone was suspended during the 2017–18 UEFA Europa League semi-finals. Burgos took charge and led Atlético Madrid to win the Europa League final. They beat Marseille.
He also led the team in the 2018 UEFA Super Cup. Atlético Madrid won 4–2 against Real Madrid in Estonia. Burgos decided to leave Atlético Madrid at the end of the 2019–20 season.
First Head Coach Roles
On 14 March 2021, Burgos got his first main coaching job. He signed with Newell's Old Boys in Argentina. His team earned ten points from eight games. They did not advance from their group in the Copa Sudamericana. After these tournaments, he left the club.
On 22 February 2022, Burgos became the manager of Aris in Greece.
Personal Life
Outside of football, Germán Burgos is also a musician. He started his music career while he was still playing football. He is the lead singer of a rock band called The Garb.
In 2003, Burgos was successfully treated for cancer.
