Discovering Germaine Bazzle's Musical Journey
Early Life and Musical Roots
Germaine Bazzle was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1932. She grew up in a part of the city called the Seventh Ward. Music was a big part of her family life. She started playing the piano by ear when she was very young, meaning she could play tunes just by listening to them.
Her formal music lessons began when she was twelve years old. She studied at the Xavier Junior School of Music. Germaine was inspired by famous jazz singers like Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, and Billy Eckstein.
From Teacher to Jazz Star
After finishing her studies at Xavier University of Louisiana, Germaine Bazzle became a teacher. She taught choir and music appreciation at Xavier Prep. She loved teaching and continued until she retired in 2008.
Even while teaching, Germaine was also a performing musician. She has worked with many other great musicians. Some of these include Red Tyler, Peter "Chuck" Badie, Victor Goines, George French, and Ellis Marsalis. She often performed with her own group, Germaine Bazzle & Friends.
Germaine also sang regularly with the Saint Louis Catholic Choir and The New World Ensemble. For over twenty years, she performed in many famous night clubs in New Orleans. She is also a big supporter and teacher at the Louis Armstrong Jazz Camp, helping young musicians learn about jazz.
