What Was the U-1165?
The U-1165 was a Type VIIC/41 U-boat. This was a common type of submarine used by Germany. When it was on the surface of the water, it weighed about 759 tons. When it was underwater, it weighed about 860 tons.
How Big Was It?
The submarine was about 67.23 meters (220 feet) long overall. Its main strong part, called the pressure hull, was about 50.50 meters (165 feet) long. It was about 6.20 meters (20 feet) wide. The submarine could go as deep as 250 meters (820 feet) underwater.
How Did It Move?
The U-1165 had two diesel engines for moving on the surface. These engines were very powerful. It also had two electric motors for moving silently underwater.
- On the surface, it could travel at a top speed of 17.7 knots (about 32.8 kilometers per hour).
- Underwater, it was slower, moving at about 7.6 knots (about 14.1 kilometers per hour).
It could travel a long way without needing to refuel. On the surface, it could go about 8,500 nautical miles (15,742 kilometers) at a speed of 10 knots. Underwater, it could travel about 80 nautical miles (148 kilometers) at 4 knots.
What Weapons Did It Have?
The U-1165 was armed with several weapons to attack enemy ships and defend itself.
- Torpedoes: It had five torpedo tubes. Four were at the front (bow) and one was at the back (stern). It carried 14 torpedoes in total. Torpedoes are like underwater missiles.
- Deck Gun: It had one 8.8 cm (3.5 inch) naval gun on its deck. This gun could fire 220 rounds.
- Anti-Aircraft Guns: To protect against airplanes, it had one 3.7 cm (1.5 inch) Flak M42 gun and two 2 cm (0.79 inch) C/30 anti-aircraft guns. These were used to shoot down enemy planes.
The submarine usually had a crew of 44 to 60 sailors and officers.
Life of the U-1165
The U-1165's journey began on 17 November 1943. It first joined the 8th Training Flotilla. This was where the crew learned how to operate the submarine.
Later, it moved to active service.
- From 1 June 1944, it was part of the 9th Flotilla.
- From 1 August 1944, it joined the 11th Flotilla.
The U-1165 did not take part in any large group attacks known as "wolfpacks."
End of Service
The U-1165 surrendered on 9 May 1945. This happened in Narvik, Norway, as World War II was ending. It was then moved to Scotland on 19 May 1945.
Finally, on 30 December 1945, the U-1165 was sunk. This was part of something called Operation Deadlight. During this operation, many captured German U-boats were sunk by the Allies so they could not be used again.
What Did It Do?
The U-1165 completed four patrols during its time in service. Its main job was to patrol and look for enemy ships.
During its service, the U-1165 sank one warship. This happened on 17 October 1944. The ship was called BMO-512 and belonged to the Soviet Union. It weighed 53 tons.
