Who is Gerry Marks?

Gerry Marks grew up in Vancouver, British Columbia. His family has a strong connection to art, as his grandfather, John Marks, was also a well-known Haida artist. This background helped Gerry connect with his cultural heritage and artistic traditions from a young age.

Learning to Carve

Gerry Marks began his artistic journey in 1971. He studied with a famous Haida carver named Freda Diesing in Prince Rupert, British Columbia. Learning from experienced artists like Freda Diesing is a very important part of passing down traditional Haida art forms. Later, he continued his studies in Hazelton, British Columbia, further developing his skills.

Creating a Totem Pole

In 1977, Gerry Marks worked on a very special project. He teamed up with another artist, Francis Williams, to carve a large totem pole. This impressive pole was 25 feet tall! They carved it in Masset, which is an ancestral Haida village located on the Queen Charlotte Islands. Totem poles are important works of art for the Haida people. They tell stories, show family history, and represent important events.
