Gertrude Baines was the oldest person in the entire world from January 2, 2009, until she passed away on September 11, 2009. She was also the very last person known to have been born in the year 1894.

Gertrude Baines' Life Story

Gertrude Baines got married to Sam Conley when she was quite young. They had one daughter, but sadly, she passed away at age 18 from a sickness called typhoid fever.

Gertrude Baines lived in Hartford, Connecticut, for some time. Later, she moved to Ohio. In Ohio, she worked as a maid at the Ohio State University. After that, she moved to California. She lived on her own in California until she was 105 years old! For her last few years, she lived at the Western Convalescent Center in Los Angeles.
