Shellman's Past: A Brief History
Shellman became an official city in 1883. It was first called Ward. This name honored John P. Ward. He had a big idea to bring the Southwest Georgia Railroad to the area. He also helped place a train station where the town center is now.
Just two years later, the town's name changed to Shellman. This new name honored Major R. F. Shellman. He was the General Traffic Manager for the Central of Georgia Railroad. Major Shellman was a big supporter of the new town. He also gave money to help build the Shellman Institute, which was the town's new school.
