Geuda Springs was founded in the 1870s. The city is named after special mineral springs nearby. These springs are known for their salty water. They have been important since the first settlers arrived.

The Healing Springs and Lake

The springs are located between Cowley and Sumner counties. Each spring can produce a lot of water every hour. The word "Geuda" is believed to be an Native American word. It means "healing springs." This suggests the area was a well-known stop for Native Americans.

The water from these springs flows into nearby creeks. A lake was formed by damming one of these creeks. This made it the largest body of salt water in Kansas. It covers about 50 acres (20 hectares).

Early Development and Changes

In the late 1880s, many improvements were made. A bath-house and a hotel were built. The lake was made better for visitors. New roads were also added for cars. People even bottled the spring water and sent it to other states. Around 1890, a dam was built to create a larger lake. This lake was big enough for boating fun.

Life in Geuda Springs Over Time

After the early 1900s, the number of people living in Geuda Springs slowly went down. In the 1950s, the town had a popular bar. It offered music, dancing, and even slot machines. Today, a volunteer fire department helps protect the town. However, the main fire protection comes from Arkansas City.

In the 1990s, a new community center was built. It's a place for residents to gather. The town also has an old church and many homes that are over 80 years old. There is a cemetery northwest of town. Some tombstones there date back to the 1870s. A famous gunfighter named Luke Short died in Geuda Springs in 1893.
