The Story of Ghetto Concept
Kwajo Cinqo (whose real name is Kwajo Boateng) and Dolo (Lowell Frazer) started Ghetto Concept in 1992. They grew up in the Rexdale and Lawrence Heights areas of Toronto. Infinite (Desmond Francis) joined them as their DJ and later became a rapper for the group.
Their first song, "Certified," came out in 1993. It was released by a small music company called Groove-a-Lot Records. In 1994, they released their second song, "E-Z On Tha Motion." Both "Certified" and "E-Z On Tha Motion" were big hits! They even won Juno Awards for these songs in 1995 and 1996.
In 1995, Infinite decided to leave the group to focus on his own music. He later became well-known for singing on the soundtrack of the video game Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike.
New Beginnings and Albums
After Infinite left, Ghetto Concept continued as a duo with Kwajo and Dolo. In 1996, they started their own music company called 7 Bills Entertainment Inc. They released a song called "Much Luv," which even featured Infinite again!
Their first album, also called Ghetto Concept, came out in 1998. It included popular songs like "Krazy World" and "Precious Metals." A famous rapper named Sticky Fingaz was on a remix of "Heavy Metals." In 1999, their song "Too Much" became very popular and earned a gold certification. This song was part of The Baby Blue Soundcrew's "Private Party" album.
In 2001, Ghetto Concept signed a deal with BMG Music Canada. That same year, they released a new version of "Too Much," called "Still Too Much." This version featured many other great Canadian artists like Maestro, Kardinal Offishall, Red-1, Ironside, and Snow. On March 19, 2002, they released another album, Ghetto Concept Presents...7 Bills All-Stars: Da Album.
Changes and Continued Music
In 2004, the group changed the name of their music company to G7 Records Inc. Around this time, they recorded new music in different cities like Toronto, Los Angeles, New York, and Atlanta. Over the years, they have made sure their music is available on all major online music platforms for everyone to enjoy.
Ghetto Concept also performed at a special event called the Hip-Hop Summit on March 29, 2011. This event was held by the CBC and was the first of its kind in Canada. They performed alongside other Canadian hip-hop legends like Maestro Fresh Wes, Michie Mee, and Dream Warriors. The concert took place at the Glenn Gould Studio and was hosted by CBC Radio 2. Ghetto Concept and the event were also shown in a documentary called Love, Props and the T.Dot.
In 2018, some pictures of Ghetto Concept were displayed in the McMichael Canadian Art Collection gallery. This gallery is famous for showing art from the legendary Group of Seven.
