She started performing professionally at just 14 years old. In 1985, she even performed on stage with the famous group Boogie Down Productions during a concert in Toronto.
Michie Mee later teamed up with DJ L.A. Luv. They formed a duo called Michie Mee and L.A. Luv. In 1987, they were featured on a Canadian hip-hop album called Break'n Out. This album was produced by KRS-One and Scott La Rock from Boogie Down Productions.
Making an Impact in Music
The duo's first song, "Elements of Style", became popular in the United States. In 1988, they signed a record deal with First Priority/Atlantic Records. This made Michie Mee the first Canadian rapper to sign with a major American record label.
In 1990, Michie Mee worked with many Toronto musicians on a special song called "Can't Repress the Cause". This song asked for more hip-hop music to be included in the Canadian music scene.
In 1991, Michie Mee and L.A. Luv released their first album, Jamaican Funk—Canadian Style. This album mixed hip-hop with dancehall reggae music. It included the popular song "Jamaican Funk". Over 60,000 copies of the album were sold in the U.S. It was also nominated for a Juno Award in 1992.
After some challenges, the duo Michie Mee and L.A. Luv broke up. L.A. Luv later joined the group Dream Warriors.
