Giannino Castiglioni (born May 4, 1884 – died August 27, 1971) was a talented Italian sculptor and medallist. He was known for creating large, impressive sculptures, especially for monuments and tombs. His art style was very realistic. He didn't follow the newer, more experimental art trends of his time.

A Sculptor's Life

Giannino Castiglioni was born in Milan, Italy, on May 4, 1884. His father, Giacomo Castiglioni, was in charge of the Stefano Johnson mint. A mint is a place where coins and medals are made.

Giannino studied sculpture at the Brera Academy in Milan. His teacher was Enrico Butti. Giannino first showed his art at the Milan International Exhibition in 1906. There, he displayed medals, a plaster statue, and a painting.

He opened a large art studio in Milan. Later, in 1927, he opened a second studio at his home in Lierna, a town by Lake Como.

Giannino married Livia Bolla. They had four children together. Three of their sons, Livio, Pier Giacomo, and Achille, became famous designers. Their daughter, Piera, sadly passed away when she was very young. Giannino created a special sculpture to remember her.

Important Artworks

From 1922 to 1928, Giannino Castiglioni worked on huge sculptures for the Palacio Legislativo in Montevideo, Uruguay. This building is like the parliament or government house in Uruguay. He made plaster models, which were then sent to Uruguay. There, they were turned into bronze or marble sculptures.

During a time known as the Fascist era in Italy, he created many sculptures for war cemeteries. These monuments honored soldiers who died in the First World War. Some of his important works include:

  • The military memorial at Monte Grappa (1935) in Italy.
  • The Tempio Ossario di Timau (1937) in Paluzza, Italy.
  • The military ossuary at Caporetto (now Kobarid, Slovenia).
  • The war memorial at Redipuglia (1938) in Italy.

In 1941, he also created the tomb for Pope Pius XI. This tomb is located in the Vatican Grottoes, which are underground areas beneath St. Peter's Basilica.
