A Look Back at Lierna's Past
Lierna has a long and interesting history! The town was first mentioned in official records way back in 854 AD. However, people lived here much earlier. We know this because Roman remains, like a beautiful mosaic floor, have been found. This mosaic is now kept in the Palazzo Belgioioso in Lecco.
The name of the village might come from either Roman or Celtic origins. For many years, between 1035 and 1202, Lierna was owned by the Monastery of San Dionigi in Milan.
Who Controlled Lierna?
Lierna was often fought over by powerful cities and families. It was a disputed area between Milan and Como. Also, two important families, the Della Torre and Visconti families, often battled for control of the town.
In 1499, Lierna came under the control of the Marchesino Stanga. Then, in 1533, it passed to the Sfondrati familyCremona. They owned Lierna until 1788. Lierna officially became its own comune in 1743. Before that, it was part of the comune of Mandello.
fromFamous People and Finds
In 1927, a famous sculptor from Milan named Giannino Castiglioni opened a studio in his house in Lierna. He lived and worked there for many years, passing away in Lierna on August 27, 1971. He left some of his early plaster casts to the town. A museum is currently being built to display these important works of art.
Lierna is also known for an exciting scientific discovery! In 1933, an incomplete fossil of a Lariosaurus balsami was found in a quarry in the area called Grumo. This creature was a type of ancient reptile called a nothosaurid. It lived about 240 million years ago during the Middle Triassic period. The first example of this creature was found in Perledo, which is about 10 kilometers (6 miles) north of Lierna. The fossil found in Lierna is now on display at the Museo di Storia Naturale in the Palazzo Belgioioso in Lecco.
