Early Football Days
Giannis Fetfatzidis started playing football when he was just six years old. He joined the Vouliagmeni academies. When he was 12, a coach from Olympiacos noticed his talent. Even though other big clubs like AEK Athens and Panathinaikos were interested, he chose to join Olympiacos.
Club Career Highlights
Playing for Olympiacos
Fetfatzidis made his first team debut for Olympiacos in the Greek championship in October 2009. Soon after, he also played his first Champions League match.
In July 2010, he played in the Europa League for the first time. He scored his first European goal in a big 6-1 win for Olympiacos. His first goal in the Greek Super League came in October 2010.
Olympiacos extended his contract until 2015 because of his great potential. In November 2011, Fetfatzidis scored an important goal against Olympique de Marseille in the Champions League, helping Olympiacos win 1-0.
Even though he helped Greece qualify for UEFA Euro 2012, he didn't play much in the tournament. At Olympiacos, he often found himself on the bench, even when he had good stats. This surprised many people. However, under coach Míchel, he started getting more chances to play.
Moving to Genoa
In September 2013, Fetfatzidis moved to Genoa, a club in Italy's Serie A. He made his first appearance for Genoa later that month.
In March 2014, he scored his first goal for the club in a 2-0 win against Lazio. In May 2014, he scored the winning goal in a 1-0 victory against Roma.
In January 2015, Fetfatzidis scored two goals in an exciting 3-3 draw against Sassuolo. Later that month, he joined Chievo Verona on loan for the rest of the season.
Time in Saudi Arabia with Al-Ahli
In July 2015, Fetfatzidis moved to Saudi Arabia to play for Al-Ahli. He signed a three-year contract.
He scored his first goal for Al-Ahli in September 2015. At the end of that season, he celebrated winning the Saudi Professional League. In August 2016, he helped Al-Ahli win the Saudi Super Cup in a penalty shootout.
He continued to score important goals for Al-Ahli, including in the AFC Champions League. By May 2018, his contract ended, and he left the club after scoring 21 goals in 100 games.
Return to Olympiacos and Aris
In May 2018, Fetfatzidis returned to Olympiacos after five years away. He scored his first goal back with the club in December 2018.
In February 2019, he joined Aris. He quickly made an impact, scoring his first goal for Aris in March 2019. He signed a new two-year contract in July 2019.
In September 2019, he had a fantastic game against Panathinaikos, scoring one goal and assisting two others in a 4-0 win. He also scored a late goal in December 2019 to secure a 2-2 draw for Aris.
Aris turned down big offers from other clubs for him. He continued to be a key player for the team.
Later Career Moves
In September 2020, Fetfatzidis joined Al-Khor SC in Qatar. His contract was set to run until 2023.
In January 2023, he signed with SPAL in Italy's Serie B. Later that year, in June 2023, he moved to APOEL in Cyprus. He was released from APOEL in January 2024.
Just a day after leaving APOEL, Fetfatzidis signed a new contract with Aris, marking his second time playing for the club.
International Career
Fetfatzidis made his debut for the Greek national team in October 2010 during a UEFA Euro 2012 qualifying game. He scored his first goal for Greece in a friendly match against Canada in February 2011.
He scored two more goals for his country in June 2011 during a Euro 2012 qualifying game against Malta. In March 2015, he was involved in a car crash after a game, but thankfully only suffered minor injuries.
Playing Style
Giannis Fetfatzidis was known as a very skilled attacking midfielder. He was good at passing the ball and scoring goals. He was not very tall, which helped him move quickly and easily on the field. He had great vision, meaning he could see his teammates and set them up for goals. He mostly used his left foot to play. He could play in different positions in the midfield or upfront, creating chances and scoring.
