Giannis Fetfatzidis: A Football Star
Starting His Football Journey
Giannis Fetfatzidis started playing football when he was just six years old. He joined the Vouliagmeni academies. Later, he played for Sourmena FC's academy. When he was 12, a coach from the Olympiacos Academies, Kostas Arzenis, noticed his talent.
Even though other big clubs like AEK Athens and Panathinaikos were interested, Giannis chose Olympiacos. The club even helped him with his growth hormone treatment.
Playing for Top Clubs
Time at Olympiacos
Giannis made his first team debut for Olympiacos in the Greek championship in 2009. This was during the 2009–10 season. He played in a winning match against Atromitos. Soon after, he made his Champions League debut. This big game was against Standard Liège in Belgium.
In 2010, he played in the Europa League for the first time. He scored his first European goal against Besa Kavajë. This happened at Olympiacos' home stadium, G. Karaiskakis Stadium. The match ended with a big 6–1 win for Olympiacos. He also scored his first goal in the Greek Super League against Skoda Xanthi.
Olympiacos was very happy with Giannis. In September 2010, they extended his contract until 2015. They also put a high release clause of €12.5 million on his contract. In 2011, Giannis scored a key goal in the Champions League. This goal helped Olympiacos win 1–0 against Olympique de Marseille.
However, things became a bit confusing for Giannis in 2012. Even though he helped Greece qualify for UEFA Euro 2012, he didn't play much in the tournament. At Olympiacos, he often sat on the bench. This was despite having good goal and assist numbers compared to other players.
The 2012–13 season was also tough. He only played in 12 league games. Still, he scored an amazing goal against Panthrakikos in the Greek Cup semi-finals. He dribbled past five opponents! Later, under coach Míchel, Giannis started getting more time on the field.
Moving to Italy: Genoa and Chievo
In September 2013, Giannis moved to Italy. He joined the Serie A club Genoa. The transfer fee was about €4 million. This made him one of the most expensive Greek players to leave the Greek league. Olympiacos kept a part of his future transfer fee.
He played his first game for Genoa on 21 September 2013. It was a 0–0 draw against Livorno. In March 2014, he scored his first goal for the club. This was in a 2–0 home win against Lazio. In May 2014, Giannis scored the winning goal against Roma. This helped Genoa win 1–0 in their last game of the season.
In January 2015, Giannis scored two goals in an exciting 3–3 draw against Sassuolo. Later that month, he moved to Chievo Verona on loan for the rest of the season.
Success in Saudi Arabia: Al-Ahli
On 30 July 2015, Giannis moved to Saudi Arabia. He joined the club Al-Ahli and signed a three-year contract. In September 2015, he scored his first goal for Al-Ahli against Hajer. At the end of that season, he celebrated winning the Saudi Professional League. He also helped Al-Ahli win the Saudi Super Cup in 2016.
In November 2016, he scored his first goal of the 2016–17 season. This was in a 4–0 home win against Al-Wehda. In March 2017, he scored in the AFC Champions League against Al Ain. In May 2017, he scored a goal that helped Al-Ahli reach the final of the King Cup.
Giannis played very well for Al-Ahli. He scored 21 goals and made 29 assists in 100 games. In May 2018, his contract ended, and he left the club.
Back to Greece and New Adventures
On 30 May 2018, Giannis returned to Olympiacos after five years. He signed a three-year contract. In December 2018, he scored his first goal back at the club. This helped Olympiacos win 3–0 against Lamia.
On 2 February 2019, Giannis joined Aris. He signed a contract until the end of the 2018–19 season. In March 2019, he scored his first goal for Aris. This was in a big 5–0 home win against Apollon Smyrnis. In July 2019, he signed a new two-year contract with Aris.
In September 2019, Giannis had a fantastic game against Panathinaikos. He scored one goal and gave two assists. This helped Aris win 4–0. In December 2019, he scored a late goal to make it a 2–2 draw against Atromitos.
In September 2020, Giannis moved to Al-Khor SC in Qatar. He signed a contract until 2023. In January 2023, he joined SPAL in Italy. Later, in June 2023, he moved to APOEL in Cyprus. On 4 January 2024, Giannis returned to Aris for his second time.
Playing for His Country: Greece
Giannis made his debut for the Greece national team in October 2010. This was during a UEFA Euro 2012 qualifying game against Latvia. He came on as a substitute in the 82nd minute.
In February 2011, he scored his first goal for Greece. This was in a friendly match against Canada. Greece won the game 1–0. Giannis scored his second and third goals for his country in June 2011. These goals came in a Euro 2012 qualifying game against Malta.
In March 2015, Giannis and two other Greek players were in a car crash. This happened after a Euro 2016 qualifier game. Luckily, they only had minor injuries. Giannis needed stitches for a head wound.
